Starting a New Art Movement - Making a List, Checking it Twice...
I have finally finished creating a whole presentation to formally announce the new art theory of UnGraven Image, although assembling the parts is still in process. The presentation (or the key parts of it) will be sent out as printed snail mail and also as email link to s special web site.
Most importantly, both the printed packet and web site include the new Manifesto for UnGraven Image Art. Bits and pieces of the information in the manifesto have appeared in the past year in blogs I have written for this site.
The mailing also includes a professionally printed brochure that shows some of my work and also some of the fun no-fail Art Quiz (that you can find under the Home link on the UnGraven Image web site if the previous link fails to work), plus for some of the recipients (galleries and alternative spaces) a proposal for a show. Most of the paintings are new and not on the “public” web site. All of the above is on the special by-invitation-only site.
The reason it is by invitation only is that when I have a show, I want most of the work to be seen for the very first time. Although, I do admit that the layers and layers of symbol-strokes give my work special texture that a low resolution jpeg image on the Internet cannot convey. For instance, what may appear to be a black area in the Montauk Lighthouse , has texture, which is clear in both the original work and the archival print.
Prayerfully, I have selected to kick off with the Genesis: Sunset-Sunrise series as the primary text used for these works is Genesis 1-2:7. That text is the original basis for UnGraven Image theory theologically, and it points directly to the cutting edge elementary physics theory known as M Theory, which deals with branes also known as strings. So for a while now I have been primarily painting in that series to create enough work for a show. My paintings are very time intensive.
I am preparing to send the mailings to top people in the art world, primarily in the USA for starters
When I began my experiment of painting in this new way I had absolutely no current knowledge of the International art world. I knew enough to figure I had better find out how the fine art business worked. Having been a writer, I know how to do research, and between my incredible local library, The Rogers Memorial in Southampton, NY, and the Internet, I have spent what would be weeks of work sorting out who is who and what is what. I still have much to learn here. [Note: I have much to learn in most every way, even having nothing to do with art. I intend to live a long time so I can learn more, especially about how to walk better with the Lord – I just stumble along at best.]
I have spent hours compiling addresses from my library's reference materials, including Who's Who in Art. I have read every issue of Art News , Art Forum and Art in America for the past two years, and beyond learning and enjoying the articles I have been compiling my list. The editors of all of these magazines are on my list.
There are other sites and publications, obviously The New York Times , Artnet, New Yorker, New York magazine, The Village Voice and ARTINFO .com. There are others, but I am concentrating on NYC for now basically.
Part of my researching includes and continues to include schlepping through NYC (which, is not that far away) on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, checking out galleries. As I have written elsewhere, I am not only checking out good galleries, I want to see how friendly and helpful the staff is, because that is meaningful to me. I also am looking at the art shown, and try to attend openings. I still have galleries on my list to check out and also revisit. The recent art fairs were a great boon for me as I could cover many galleries, at least briefly in a single day. In a previous blog I wrote about some of those that I appreciate, but certainly not all were mentioned.
The clergy and lay people who are already my fans, may or may not have the funding to purchase original works, still, I want them to always feel welcome at the gallery that represents my work.
My mailing list includes galleries, curators and museum directors, art critics, educators, art advisors and collectors. Emailing is free, but sending out the packet costs, and that remains a factor.
If you know of someone who you believe should receive a packet, please email me. Tell me who this person is and possibly why you believe this person should have a packet or email link to the special site. Again, I am specifically reaching out to museums, curators, galleries, critics, educators, advisors and critics.Plus some clergy and scientists.
Unfortunately, I am sure that I am missing some prominent people whom I should contact, since I am founding a new theory of art, that is and will grow into an emerging movement.
So, if you are reading this, even long after the publication date and you know someone who you believe should be contacted and possibly receive the information packet, including the manifesto, please email me at info@ungravenimage.com .
