How to Be a Trendsetter and Help Start an Art Theory and Even a Movement

We all participate in society and to some degree create history by our actions; some actions have more repercussions, either positive or negative than others.

Some people are trend setters, the people who are first to own or talk about the newest gadget, fashion, entertainment, books – you get the idea. Trend setter, also known as early adopters, have more of an impact than the cautious folks who wait and follow, especially when it comes to the arts, fashion and real investments. They also tend to benefit more from opting in and spreading a trend, in prestige and also often financially. Trendsetters definitely help make history.

Often celebrities are known as trend setters, but usually they are only following the advice of the real trendsetters who advise the stars, and are highly paid for their service. That is why suddenly all the women stars are carrying large bags or small bags, or go to a certain restaurant, spa or resort. Think of an era in the 20 th Century, for example the sixties. The early hippies were trendsetters, and their long hair and funky tie-dye clothes helped make the history of that time.

Of course, the trick is spotting a winning trend early. Usually by the time a new trend hits the nightly news it has been discovered by the early adopters who are now set to benefit from the trend, at the very least by impressing others that they discovered and made known, bought or used the item or idea first.

Simply knowing about a new trend does not make one a trendsetter. Knowledge is only powerful if one uses it and shares it.

The best way I know of to spot a trend is to find something I want myself, whether it is popular or not. It's the instant: I like that , or that makes sense ! The problem is, most of us then double think, we look around to see who else has it or worse, we worry what others will think, especially of us. Those secondary thoughts are what separate the trend setters and the real creative visionaries in any field from others.

Obviously the brand new theory of art is a trend awaiting discovery. Historically, new art theories take a while to catch on, long enough for the dealers and early collectors to make a hefty profit. Andy Warhol's west coast premiere at the Ferus Gallery was a bust. As Abstract Expressionism was now in fashion (remember when it wasn't and Jackson Pollack was trading canvases for groceries?). However, the exhibit launched a debate in the media. You know the rest, how expensive an authentic Warhol soup can silk screen paintings or Pollack drip paintings are today.

Today we have the Internet. We also have a great marketer who writes books by the name of Seth Godin. From several of his books, especially, Unleashing the Idea Virus , came the idea of giving away, via the Internet copies of the Manifesto For UnGraven Image Art to anyone who wants to download a copy. It seems to me that had Andy Warhol had the Internet, it is something he would have done, too.

Now anyone who wants to be an artistic trendsetter can freely download the Manifesto of Post Conceptual UnGraven Image - a Painting's Meaning is Inherent in its Strokes for free!

The download is the full booklet in PDF version or as a manuscipt on regular sized printer paper. It can easily be printed as a booklet by following the instructions on the average printer's properties set up screen for duplex printing.

"The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed." -- Albert Einstein
