The Dock Less TraveledIn the Hebrew Bible the term "water" symbolically refers to Torah, also known as the Pentateuch (first five books of the Bible). The word for water in Hebrew is "mayim" (pronounced: my-em). There is a strong biblical connection between "the waters above and the waters below (heavens) as the Hebrew word for heavens/sky is shamayim (pronounced: sha-my-em). In this sunset, the water below reflects the vibrant colors of the heavens above. A path of Light leads to the dock and across the waters below. When the Psalmist sings of a "tree planted by the water", that Tree of Life (in this psalm, that's a righteous person) is firmly planted (standing) in scripture. The spiritual/religious experience is a relationship, a walk with the Creator. That walk can be seen as a walk on a dock as well as on a path. For me, it's a daily, even hourly, minute by minute decision whether to walk along the path, to dare to jump into the "water" or at least walk with it lapping my feet, which are still securely on the dock anchored to the land. It's written that Jesus walked on the water (symbolically again, that's scripture), Jacob had a well (again the water imagery) named after him, Noah survived the Flood (scripture and the promises of the Bible are a blessing or a curse depending on who one is "walking" with) and wherever Miriam went a source of water followed for the 12 tribes wandering in the desert. This artwork is an inspiration and reminder to me. Some days, it seems all I can do, and even struggle to accomplish that, is to stay on the "dock" with the Lord.
