There is a wonderful lighthouse at the end of Long Island, in Montauk. Currently, it is imperiled by the encroaching, rising seas. When I was a girl, every summer we would take a ride out to the lighthouse, which guards the place when the Atlantic Ocean meets Peconic Bay . It is the eastern most point in New York State. Near this site is the only place any Nazis managed to land on the USA during World War II – they were quickly apprehended. Andy Warhol had a home in Montauk, which still exists today. Tourists are allowed to climb to the top of the lighthouse. Since this is the easternmost point on Long Island there is nothing but sea between here and Europe. Whales and dolphins can swim past. Lighthouses are often though of as a spiritual or religious symbols, although they are not mentioned in any major text of any path or religion. Yet, the metaphor of the lifesaving light from the tower shining through the night or a storm is clear. However, the lighthouse's beam never saved a ship or sailor. It was keeping a lookout for the beams from lighthouses and then correcting one's course that saved lives. This print is a sunrise, heralding the light has made it through the night to welcome the dawn.
