How to Commission an Essence Portrait

The Art of Seeing The Divine in Ourselves & Others

Portraits Made with Symbol-Strokes

Commissioning an Essence Portrait is a bit different from standared portraits, because these are radically new Contemporary Art works, not traditional portrait paintings.

Unlike traditional portrait painting the first step is not a photo session or obtaining photos or even a live portrait sitting. Essence Portraits begin with the strokes and discovering the divine about you or the subject. The meaning of a Post Conceptual portrait painting is intrinsic in its strokes.

Since the focus is on the underlieing meaning, revealing the divine through the strokes, our focus immediately turns to deciding on the texts for the strokes. Your portrait cannot be created without strokes.

Some people have favorite Hebrew Testament texts, such as a psalm, or texts that were read during their wedding, making a bar or bat mitzvah, or other celebration. Finding the texts to use for other people can take time and research as we discuss their interests and passions.

Of course, when you have an Essence Portrait on your home or office wall you will be able to point with pride and explain that your portrait is created with the words of special Bible texts.

Interested in commissioning an Essence Portrait of yourself or a loved one? Send an email to: portrait@ungravenimage.com If possible include a brief description of the person to be considered for the portrait, sex, age, interests, job, etc -- but keep it very brief at this point. If you live in the USA or Canada please include your phone number for a free initial, no obligation consultation about your portrait.

Money, Materials and Time

Commissioning an Essence Portrait can be understood as an investment in cutting edge contemporary art as well as acquiring the luxury item of a personal portrait.

Throughout art history, collecting the work of any artist who began a new theory of art (such as Impressionism, Cubism, Conceptual or Pop Art) or collecting an artist who is counted as a founder of a theory/movement has proven to be an excellent investment. You can check this data out for yourself easily.

Of course, buying art in the early stages of a founder's career usually reaps the best percentage of profits on investment. Think of the financial benefits accrued by those early collectors of founders of other art theories, such as those of Andy Warhol, Camille Pissarro, Pablo Picasso, etc.

Costs for Essence Portraits vary, due to time and materials and the extent of the whole project. For instance a simple package would include a basic Essence Portrait with black letters plus one version with color. However the materials used, size of the works and time it takes to finalize the strokes, reveal the divine (a person's passions, how the help others, spirituality, etc.) can vary as can the time and distance travelled for a photo shoot -- or arrangements for obtaining photos and visual information.

Since the basic Essence Portrait allows for the possibility of multiples, business people with more than one office or store, parents and grandparents can consider commissioning multiples, the way the Andy Warhol created multiple editions of subjects such as Marilyn Monroe.

A basic Essence Portrait is usually black symbols on a light or white background; it can be reconfigured into other Essence Portraits in color. It is created using hand drawn or painted strokes with ink and/or acrylic paint.

Following that other portraits may be created and commissioned (or commissioned as part of the initial package) that may be on canvas or paper, uniquly created using paint and or digital paint and color. For more ideas about the how color and background can be created for your portrait see http://ungravenimage.com/essencevideos.php

When agreeing to a commission, it's a good idea to have a contract with the price, a description of the portrait and the terms in writing. We do that. A deposit of one third begins the initial work, which includes visual research, conversations, possibly a photo shoot and meeting, plus discovering the best text(s) to use for the strokes.

Once I know you well enough to perceive the divine in you, we have agreed on the strokes (texts), and image(s) to use for the basic Essence Portrait the work on that begins. At that time the second one-third payment is due. When the works are completed the final one third payment is due and the works are then shipped or delivered to you.

A special discount is given to anyone whose commission is accepted who agrees in the initial contract to allow me continuing use of the basic portrait in other works, much the way artists have traditionally used models. For instance, Rembrandt used himself and friends models for paintings that included religious stories. Some of my projects will need people to play positive or neutral "roles" in the artworks. This of course, will further promote your image.
