Sag Harbor Bridge Sunset There's something magical about bridges, maybe even mystical. Sure, there's the symbolism of a bridge over troubled waters and a bridge from where we are to where we want to go... but, I think there is something more than that... In Hebrew and in the Bible, the word mayim (pronounced my-em) means water. Biblically, water stands for Torah, or the Pentateuch, which are the first five books of the Bible. Symbolically, a bridge is something one can walk or ride out on over the Bible, or scripture. If we cannot actually immerse ourselves and have the waters of the Word surround or flow over us, or even walk on the water, at least we can be suspended or hover over it on a bridge. Perhaps, in life as we travel over the mayim, we bridge from the dry land of our birth to the dry land of our departure. Maybe life is a bit like a bridge. Taking us from one solid understanding or reality to another. I took the photos that the original painting this artwork is based upon one summer evening in Sag Harbor, NY. The image is of a real bridge that I have crossed since childhood. It is the bridge that the artist Ray Johnson is said to have jumped from and then was never seen again.
