Outside my studio window, birds that usually easily found forage amongst the many seeds and berries flitted about desperately searching for provision. Inside the news on TV, Internet and radio covered our unusual blizzard with the resulting, power outages and automobile accidents and warnings, but most of the news stories were about the tsunami. I painted with the new watercolor pencils I was experimenting with, listened to the news, and prayed for people I could not name.
Amidst the horror, misery and destruction of the tsunami there were stories of the miraculous. One was about a game preserve where much to the surprise of the preserve keepers and reporters on assignment, none of the animals were lost. There was devastation in the resort area connected to the preserve, which was in an area close to hills. The various wild species were saved because for some inexplicable reason they all headed up to the hills before the people had any sign of the tsunami. In fact, the lives of one family of tourists were spared because the elephants they were riding decided to ignore the commands of their trainer by calmly but purposefully heading for the hills, while the tourists were strapped on their backs. The trainer also lived because he continued to run along ordering the elephants to turn back.
Scientists have observed the change in the behavior of some species, most notably roaches, just before a major earthquake. So far this observation has not resulted in our ability to predict a quake. Yet, the roach's ability to tune in or be aware of an approaching natural danger might begin to account for the fact that its species is one of the oldest on earth.

PSALM 69 (Seagull) 2005
11 x 14 inches, watercolor pencil on paper
Collect the Fine Art Print
The Written on the Wind series is painted using comforting, inspiring and/or prophetic portions of the Bible, primarily the Psalms. The first painting was the male cardinal created with the words of the "23rd Psalm". Both he and his mate (second painting) are shown contrasted against the snow, poised for a moment, as if listening or concentrating on something important.
"Art seems to me to be above all a state of soul. All souls are sacred, the soul of all the bipeds in every quarter of the globe." -- Marc Chagall
How can we become more aware of the special words, the promptings that we need to hear and act on as a society and as individuals? Since awareness precedes understanding, and then control, we first need to become aware of the hidden reality.

PSALM 85 (Song Sparrow)
14 x 11 inches, watercolor pencil |
For me, the words of the Creator are the building blocks, waves and essential dimensions of the universe. For me as a citizen of the twenty-first century, the understanding of the infinitesimal wave-like motions, alternate universes and other wonders of modern physics unfold on an ongoing and stimulating basis. My experience of the universe and my interpretation and belief(s) about it create my reality. Basic Judeo-Christian metaphysics meets physics and vice versa.
In the Written on the Wind series each painting is created using the words of a single psalm. The psalms differ from painting to painting. Psalms are prayers, which we say to the Lord and that are the Lord's words to us found in the Bible. Prayer is communication and communication goes both ways, in and out. Although UnGraven Image art's concept of using the Hebrew letters to symbolically represent the smallest wave-like motions, the essential pre-matter of our Universe continues to be followed, the focus is further narrowed to the finer perception of the intrinsic communication/harmony of the universe. Scientists call this instinct, others say intuition, but for believers (including me) it can mean perceiving the person promptings of the Lord. Therefore, in this series, when a "frame" is drawn, it is purposefully left open at the top, to further emphasize the openness to communication to and from the Highest.
