When you look at the artwork of And You Shall Love… Winter do you see a tree in winter or the Words of God that create the world?

Judy Rey Wasserman’s UnGraven Image art presents images that are totally created by strokes that are the Torah font letters used as traditional art stokes. These letter-strokes are interwoven, layered, glazed and used seemingly randomly here and there. They represent and emulate the tiniest particles of matter and pre-matter. They also represent the words of the Creator, Ruler of the universe through Whose word all things are called into being in Genesis 1.

In And You Shall Love… Winter each stroke is an original Hebrew Torah font letter from the verses of Deuteronomy 6:5-9

And You Shall Love… Winter is both resting and standing strong with hope against the cold and days of shortened light—which now day by day begin to grow longer. The Winter Tree of Life is emptied of leaves allowing the snow to fall through its limbs and boughs. This allows any light to reflect from that snow and ice, which forms on sunny days when as snow begins to melt. The bark of the tree is most clearly seen, revealing the skeleton of the Tree of Life series, written in black Torah font letters: the original words of Deuteronomy 6:5-9.

“And thou shalt write them upon the door-posts of thy house, and upon thy gates.” — Deuteronomy 6:9

An aggressive winter snowstorm can bring a busy city – a city filled with the noise of commerce and merriment, plus shouts, honking, and sirens – to a complete and silent standstill. People stay indoors, in their homes, safely tucked away.

The children of Israel followed the instructions the Lord God gave to Moses In Exodus 12:1-13. On their final night in Egypt before their exodus from bondage they put the blood of a lamb on their doorposts as a sign to show to the Lord God (and anyone else) who they were. This spared them from the plague of the first born.

After our festive displays of lights, after the holidays are past, in the grey cold days of winter the visible decorations we place on our doorposts (including the doorposts inside our homes, and gates may often the only decorations seen by passers-by, guests, or even by our own families as we come and go. A reminder that even in our darkest days we are reminded to go forth loving the Lord with all our heart, with all our soul, and with all our might.

“And you shall write them upon the door-posts of your house, and upon thy gates.”

The original Torah font letters of Deuteronomy 6:5-9 are the colorful strokes that create this image. These unique letter-strokes symbolize the basic belief that is held by all branches and denominations of Judaism and Christianity — that the letters of the words spoken by the Lord God are the tiny basic building blocks of our world (the physical universe).

The scripture of Deuteronomy 6:5-9 is also known as the Vahavta prayer. It is one of the most important prayers in the Torah, also known as the Pentateuch, which is the first 5 books of the Bible. It is said in Jewish synagogues everyday, prayed in the morning and evening services.
