Tree of Light — 2017

Maybe it’s a coincidence that the Festival of Light, Hanukah, falls closely with and in some years, falls on the winter solstice. Maybe a coincidence, but in the Hebrew Testament there is no word for “coincidence”.

Christian scholars assure us that Jesus (in Hebrew, Yeshua) was definitely not born near the time of the winter solstice.  The Greek Testament tells us that Joseph and Mary were on their way to Jerusalem, a pilgrimage to the Temple that Jews took at Passover and for the Holy Days of Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and Sukkot.  The Early Church, and especially the Holy Roman Church of the early middle ages, created a holiday called “Christmas” to coincide with and compete for audience share with pagan celebrations of the solstice.

Hanukah, the Festival of Light, is not found in the Hebrew Testament, also called the Tanakh. The story of Hanukah is found in the Apocrypha, which is a non-canonical collection of writings. The true story of the Macabees and the miracle of eight days of light occurred during the time between the two testaments.

Hanukah is what is called a “rabbinic” holiday. This means it is not a holiday that must be observed according to Mosaic Law from the Bible. Passover, which becomes Easter in Christianity and Shavuot, which becomes Pentecost are examples of biblically commanded holidays. The early Christians celebrated Hanukah, especially the Jewish followers of Jesus celebrated Hanukah, known also as the Feast of Dedication, in John 10:22.

Basic theology from both testaments confirms and encourages our bringing light into the world, especially during dark times. Stemming from Genesis 1, when the LORD G- D first created light (and by that light saw that it was good/tov).  We give thanks for the miracle of Light that came and is in our world and lives and the miracle of the light that miraculously sustains us in our times of darkness.

Plus, we, as the observant children of the Creator, are encouraged to follow His example (as best we can). We light lights, we give gifts of charity and kindness.

In Western Jewish and Christian cultures, this holiday time is a season of light – but it is also a season of trees.

As described in the Bible, a menorah is a kind of image of a tree, often ornamented, that holds individual burning lamps, or candles, and more recently even electric lights. A Christmas tree is a real tree or some version of a tree (realistic or abstract) that is decorated with ornaments and in the past candles, but now usually electric lights.

Hanukah is very popular joyous holiday of gift giving, singing special songs, and enjoying special rich foods, and candy. Christians, followers of Jesus, are following His (and His early disciples’ example) by lighting when they Christmas trees, giving gifts, singing carols, and dining on special rich foods, and candy on Christmas.

The artwork below, Tree of Light – 2017, is a colored in coloring page, both by me, Judy Rey Wasserman. Is it a Hanukah menorah – or a Christmas tree?  We celebrate together!

The words on the tree are KJV translation of 2 Samuel 22:29. You can see that text cited on the base of the tree.

The un-colored coloring page follows with a direct link to a printout PDF of the page itself – a special holiday gift from me to you – but only from Hanukah eve through Christmas night 2017.  After that the link will be removed.

Hoilday Tree of Light. Is it a Menorah or a Christmas tree?
In 2018, a coloring book for adults, created with psalms, will be published and available for you on Amazon.  The coloring page below is a kind of taste test for you that is available via the link to a PDF that will immediately open up below. Save to your device and print on 8.5 x 11 paper. The link will only be active and work from Hanukah eve through Christmas night 2017.

Snow Globe Snowflake – Isaiah 60:1-2

Snow Globe Snowflake is an artwork that can stand-alone in black and white or be used as an adult coloring page.  This work includes the text of Isaiah 60:1-2.

“1 Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.

“2 For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the Lord shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee.” — Isaiah 60:1-2

Almost coinciding with the winter solstice, which is the darkest and shortest day on the year for peoples in the Northern Hemisphere, all Jews and Christians celebrate miracles of light. Both religions light trees with candles, as menorahs are based on trees.

Light is one of the most important topics found in the Bible, which begins with the creation of light.

Emulating our Heavenly Father, the Eternal I Am, we unite at this time in our need to bring more light into this world.  Snowflakes are always six pointed crystal stars in different permutations, and you will find many in Snow Globe Snowflake. Yet, you can also find a couple of “hidden” crosses (X) in the artwork.

Snow Globe Snowflake playfully depicts our holiday time of celebrating Light, and joining in to bring bring more light into the world during our darkest days in the calendar. It is also a blessing for you at this time and in the new secular year that, “…the Lord shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee.”

Snowflake (Isaiah 55)

This basic Essence Portrait of a snowflake is created with the original Torah font Hebrew letters of Isaiah chapter 55, used for each and every stroke.

” For as the rain cometh down and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, except it water the earth, and make it bring forth and bud, and give seed to the sower and bread to the eater;
” So shall My word be that goeth forth out of My mouth: it shall not return unto Me void, except it accomplish that which I please, and make the thing whereto I sent it prosper.” –  Isaiah 55:10-11

Snowflakes fascinate me, as long as I do not need to shovel or trudge through an accumulation of them.

The images of snowflakes seen under microscopes show symmetrical hexagons of frozen lace-like forms. Under the microscope they are seen now as imperfect as their originally perfect frozen shapes are rendered askew by air and anything they contact.  This is why the snowflake above is imperfect, two of it’s arms or wings are too close together, moved a brief encounter with an outside force.

In the Bible, the Hebrew word, water (pronounced mayim) both refers to real water and the Word of The Divine that flows, and nourishes, which we also call the Torah, the Pentateuch or the Bible (either the Hebrew testament or both testaments depending on one’s faith or frame of reference). When water freezes it turns into crystal form, basically clear so that we can see through it in a new way.Snowflake --Isaiah 55 by Judy Rey Wasserman

Snowflake ( Isaiah 55)

Due to their geometrical shapes that can easily be understood as thicker and thinner lines, it is easy to understand a snowflake as created by letters, or the strings of elementary physics, or the words of The Divine. I can “see” each snowflake is a kind of heavenly, fleeting, visually whispered message.

Although Snowflake (Isaiah 55) works as a stand-alone image, it was conceived to be a part of other
projects.

This black and white image will be used by me in various ways, including as a part of a special downloadable holiday 2013 gift that will be sent out to the members of my mailing list. [You can quickly join this list via the subscription form in the left column.  Then you need to affirm and activate your subscription. So watch for and immediately respond to the email asking you to confirm your subscription. As you can guess from the information on this site and blog, the newsletter included inspiration, news, sometimes a free gift and first call opportunities for new works, limited and so far free webinars, etc.  The newsletter is supposed to arrive monthly, and my new year’s resolution is to actually meet that goal, which has not been met is the last five years for more than three months at a time! )

Below is the King James translation of the texts that inspired me to use this scripture for the strokes of this snowflake. You can easily spot the reference to snow.  Since all of my artworks use the letters from scripture texts to both represent the strings of elementary physics and for the image, I am especially fond of the promise of verse, 11, as it leads me to enjoy thinking of my artworks hanging on people’s wall being viewed and  “prospering” those who view them.  (I use the King James translation as it is in public domain)

Isaiah 55:

6 Seek ye the LORD while He may be found, call ye upon Him while He is
near;

7 Let the wicked forsake his way, and the man of iniquity his thoughts;
and let him return unto the LORD, and He will have compassion upon him,
and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.

8 For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways,
saith the LORD.

9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher
than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.

10 For as the rain cometh down and the snow from heaven, and returneth
not thither, except it water the earth, and make it bring forth and
bud, and give seed to the sower and bread to the eater;

11 So shall My word be that goeth forth out of My mouth: it shall not
return unto Me void, except it accomplish that which I please, and make
the thing whereto I sent it prosper.

12 For ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace; the
mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and
all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.

13 Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress, and instead of the
brier shall come up the myrtle; and it shall be to the LORD for a
memorial, for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.

Basic Sunflower Portrait

Basic Sunflower Portrait is another artwork in my continuing investigation of black )on white background) vs. color  strokes to create portraits of people, places, flora, fauna and things (like USA currency bills).

I have been told since I first entered the High School of Music and Art that color is one of my strong suits. Making images without color is like being on a severe diet or fast, it almost physically hurt when I began with the first Essence Portrait, which was of Andy Warhol several years ago.

Even when I have studied art or made sketches I always envision the color I will be adding eventually. Now with the Basic Essence Portraits and images (you can see this as a portrait of a sunflower, I am concentrating of creating works in black and white that can stand on their own, without color, but to which color can be added.

As a school girl, before I began any formal art education, I hung out a lot in the great museums and galleries of NYC, where I “discovered” van Gogh and Rouault, both who often outline their forms in a dark color. Later Warhol’s silk-screens, with their strong black images and colored paints added their influence.

My Essence Portrait works take a next step as while my black strokes are also used to physically define the form(s) of the image they are the very importance of it due to their symbols, which are always the original Torah font letters of a Bible text. For me, the strokes are always paramount. Strokes are the intrinsic and essential reality of any painting, and that emulates the reality that pre-particles or energy is the intrinsic and essential reality of our physical universe.

Watch for a new version — in color — of this image coming soon to this blog.
